Ghost Jobs and Stale Listings: What to Watch For
Stale listings and ghost jobs on any job board — what to check before you apply.
The problem
You tailor a CV, write a cover letter, apply — and hear nothing. Sometimes the role was never urgent. Sometimes it was filled weeks ago but still visible on a board. Sometimes the post exists only to collect CVs for a future pipeline.
On LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, and regional job boards worldwide, aggregators can keep listings visible longer than the hiring need. That is not always malicious. It is still expensive for candidates who treat every post as equally real.
Signs a listing may be stale
- Posted months ago with identical text and no "reposted" signal
- Same job ID recycled under a new title
- Company careers page does not list the role
- "Always hiring" language with no team or project detail
- Application link broken or redirects to a generic form
One sign is not proof. Two or three together mean: verify before you invest tailoring time.
What you can do in five minutes
1. Open the company careers page if it exists 2. Note the posting date on the canonical source 3. Search title + company for duplicates 4. Skim LinkedIn or local networks for recent hires in that team 5. Decide: apply, save for later, or skip
For roles you care about, a polite confirmation to HR or the recruiter is acceptable in any market.
How this connects to AI job search
AI makes it faster to produce application materials. That is good only if the input role is worth it. Speed without verification multiplies wasted effort.
A useful workflow verifies first, then tailors — the approach Lemu Work is built around.
